Nevermore

How do you create a promotional ad for a story app that's based on a classic tale?
Challenge
The challenge was to create a motion graphics promotional ad for a new app called Nevermore. The app is based on the work of Edgar Allen Poe. Using the work of Poe as a starting point, the app attempts to horrify the users in a long, immersive tale. Users follow along with an increasingly terrifying tale that’s updated every week.

Solution
The idea was to use Edgar Allen Poe’s Nevermore as a starting point, so I wrote a script that has a raven as the element leading the viewer from one scene to the next. I then storyboarded the shots to help me visualize the ad for the app. For the color palette, since my goal was to make the ad feel spooky, I chose a monochromatic color palette for most of the shots. I added a fog element to help with the spooky atmosphere. I also added sound elements to enhance the spookiness—like a raven cawing, a creaking door, and a devious laugh. I then added music scores that I thought worked with the shots. I created a title treatment that moved in time with the music in the opening and closing shots to create visual and auditory engagement with the audience.
